The PCPM Foundation in Lebanon urgently cleans riverbeds, repairs damaged roads and provides electricity. PCPM’s assistance in Lebanon extends beyond immediate crises; it’s a proactive step to prevent potential disasters. Amidst the looming threat of winter floods and a possible war, the foundation is working tirelessly to secure the region.

PCPM’s activities in Lebanon, as part of a project funded by the Polish Aid program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are planned for the next three years. – As a first step, we cleaned 2,500 meters of the Al-Ostuan riverbed in Akkar province, in the north of the country. Last year, the river overflowed, threatening the lives of residents and causing significant damage to farmers. That’s why we have widened the bank and removed the accumulated debris before winter arrives and the currently dry riverbed turns into a raging torrent. Thanks to this, residents and farmers can sleep more soundly and not worry about next year’s crops,” says Elie Keldany of the PCPM Foundation.

The looming possibility of regional conflict has accelerated the pace of these efforts. The volatile situation affects security and basic necessities like food, as prices could skyrocket in case of war.

Resilience

In collaboration with local authorities, PCPM is implementing projects to enhance the region’s resilience against natural disasters and health threats. The frequent cholera outbreaks due to contaminated water have prompted the foundation to expand sewage systems and irrigation canals.

Safe Roads

Lebanon’s challenges extend beyond natural disasters and conflict. A recent wildfire severely damaged the Kobayat-Akkar mountain road, making it perilous for larger vehicles. PCPM is working to repair the road, improve signage, and provide crisis management training to local officials.

Powering the Future

Electricity shortages are another pressing issue. PCPM has been installing solar-powered streetlights and providing solar kits to households. The foundation is now upgrading a civil defense post in Sed El Bauchrieh with solar panels to ensure uninterrupted emergency services.
