Needs don’t stand still. Neither does our aid.
For hundreds of kilometres, there is no other place like it. For years, the PCPM Nutrition Centre in Gordhim has been a lifeline for children in this part of South Sudan – providing therapeutic food, essential medicines and care. But the need is no longer only at our doorstep. People are arriving in areas where there is little or no access to healthcare, food or clean water. Many cannot make the journey to Gordhim. So we take the journey to them.
Why isn’t help in Gordhim enough?
Since 2025, South Sudan has been receiving refugees fleeing the war in Sudan, as well as people returning home after years abroad. Between May and July 2026 alone, 4,728 people arrived in Buothyar. Many arrive with little more than what they can carry. Some have gone days without enough food or access to safe water. Local health facilities are under enormous pressure, facing shortages of medicines, staff and resources. For young children, the consequences can be devastating. Malnutrition weakens their bodies and makes them more vulnerable to infections and disease. We wrote more about the situation in our article “South Sudan on the brink and caught in a trap”.
Taking healthcare beyond the clinic walls
Our mobile medical team regularly travels to Buothyar, bringing essential healthcare directly to people who would otherwise struggle to access it.
Sometimes, that means treating an illness. Sometimes, it means providing essential medicines. And sometimes, the first step is simply finding out whether a child is malnourished and needs urgent support.
In the first half of 2026 alone:
- 50% of all medical and nutritional services we provided took place outside our stationary Centre.
- We delivered more than 4,000 mobile medical consultations in the field.
- We assessed the nutritional status of 3,400 children directly in the communities we serve.
This is what it means to bring healthcare closer to those who need it most.
And none of it would be possible without your support.
Because nutrition support alone is not enough
Our presence in Buothyar quickly showed us that the assistance we provide needs to be comprehensive. Children weakened by hunger are particularly vulnerable to infections and diseases, which further increase the risks to their lives. That is why, alongside nutritional support, we consistently provide:
- Vaccinations – we have vaccinated more than 1,500 children under the age of one, including against tuberculosis, polio, tetanus and diphtheria.
- Hygiene education – we have conducted nearly 5,000 educational sessions for mothers, giving them practical tools to protect their children’s health.
Despite a decrease in the overall number of medical consultations, the number of nutritional assessments and detected cases of malnutrition increased by 60%. This means that we were able to reach people at risk of malnutrition more effectively and better identify those who needed support.

When the nature disrupts our plans…
Working in South Sudan also means dealing with unpredictable forces of nature that can change our priorities in an instant. In August, strong winds destroyed the main water tank in the clinic in Gordhim. The situation is critical. Without the tank, the entire facility has lost access to running water, therefore it cannot safely treat patients.
